The Women’s Fashion For Autumn 2020 Trends to Look Out For

As the summer wardrobe comes down and the cosiest knits come out to play, it’s time to start planning your autumn clothes. Even the most fashion-forward of us won’t annually completely revamp our closet but adding a few key pieces can ensure your outfits are bang on trend for the new season. From fringes to fringing, capes to hoodies and snake jewellery to slouchy boots here are the women’s fashion for autumn 2020 trends to look out for.

For the discerning fashionista, the AW2021 catwalks were peppered with designs that were both practical and luxe. For example, the return of pleated trousers and skirts (Arabia by Rihanna), a nod to 90’s nostalgia with denim dresses worn over long cardigans or jackets (Chewna by Stella McCartney) and the full-blown grown up ‘Clueless’ look of plaid suits and blouses (Marco de Vincenzo, MSGM and Gucci).

A nod to religion was also spotted in the form of embroidered crosses and floral patterns on skirts and dresses (Prada, Paco Rabanne) and in tulle gowns with long fringed sleeves that were seen on the runways at Valentino, Rejina Pyo and Rodarte. Meanwhile, a nod to femininity was embodied in lace and sheer dresses that were both sophisticated and romantic.

Fringe is back and it’s not your usual Hell’s Angel’s tassels and chains but longer, extreme and more glam, as seen on dresses, skirts and coats at Valentino, Balenciaga and Prada. The swishing, dramatic silhouette was a hit on the runways and a huge street style favourite (see Instagrammers Emily Ratajkowski and Hailey Baldwin).

While black and grey remain the go-to shades of choice for the season, other colours are making an appearance too. Coral has been popularised by the likes of Rihanna and Taylor Swift and is paired with blue, white and yellow at Zara, Marks & Spencer and Primark while buttery yellow is popping up on #FashionTikTok thanks to Givenchy and Stella McCartney.

Leather is a major trend for the season whether in full-on biker gear as seen at Valentino and Gucci or a more refined take such as long shearling dresses, shirting jackets with inbuilt scarf/throw detail and oxblood seersucker tailoring. Romantic ruffled and lace dresses are a must while formal shirting looks with floral embroideries, slit hem cashmere skirts and ribbed chenille shirts offer a more structured option.

Whether you’re after sneakers or heels, leather is a footwear favourite of the moment with all-leather looks a must-have (Nike Air Rifts in pink and black as seen on Emily Ratajkowski and Justin Bieber) while heeled snake print boots add an edgy finish to your outfit. For a chic alternative to stilettos, try leather ballet flats as seen at River Island, TK Maxx and All Saints.

A touch of sparkle is always welcome and fortunately, this season’s jewellery is super sparkly, from the choker-style necklaces spotted at Balenciaga and Dior to the more demure pearls that are a nod to our childhoods (look for styles with gold-tone hardware from MSGM and Marco De Vincenzo). Finally, it’s all about snake print boots and slouchy boots this autumn with the former leading the pack. Try TK Maxx, All Saints and River Island for the best options.
