1860s fashion
Women’s dress in the 1860s was generally tailored and thigh-length, with low necklines. Hair was usually parted in the centre, but clean-shaven was rare.
The most fashionable hairstyles were complicated twists and rolls, falling to the shoulders and adorned with ribbons and bands. Hats were tiny and tilted forwards, though later in the decade wider brimmed “picture” hats became popular.
Gowns were also a common fashion, with long pointed bodices and ruffs that were both clever and practical, especially when tied back into a swoop with a wide French farthingale or half-roll.
Embroidered fashions were common in the 1860s and included a partlet which was typically made from lawn (a fine linen) and richly decorated with lace detailing to match the kirtle and gown.
A small lace or beaded tiara was an effective hair accessory.
The best part of this particular style was that it could be worn with the shortest hair lengths, allowing for an attractive and modern look, even in the city!
The 1860s was a time when women were beginning to show their true colours, experimenting with fashion and expressing themselves through dress. A sweeping train was particularly popular, as was the ‘long-dress’ hemline. It was a surprisingly elegant and sexy look, but it was difficult to pull off as the dress hung over the shoulders and the top of the hips.
