It’s that time of year again, when the clothes that walked down the runways in London, Milan and Paris back in January are finally hitting stores. While this season’s collection was notably toned down in terms of colour, print and texture, there were some standout trends that have us excited for the winter ahead.
One of the key ladies fashion for winter 2020 was a return to power silhouettes, seen in full force across the runways. From the voluminous structured dresses at Emilia Wickstead, Roksanda and Burberry to the exaggerated shoulder puffs and long-sleeved oversized gowns at Valentino and Gabriela Hearst to the wide pant leg looks at Brandon Maxwell and Khaite, it seems that the bodycon dress has been given a new-found appreciation for shape.
Another way that power dressing made its mark was through the use of masculine blazers, seen in the boxy fits at Prada and Carolina Herrera and the belted styles at Gucci, Michael Kors and Brock Collection. This season, tailored blazers are a key part of the modern closet, and they look particularly stylish when worn with trousers in a wide-leg cut.
The tidal wave of knitwear is set to carry on into the colder months, with cable-knit dresses making a comeback centre stage. We’re also seeing more jumpsuits this winter, from the relaxed styles at Vivienne Westwood and Paco Rabanne to the fitted silhouettes seen at Stella McCartney. If you’re looking for something a little more romantic, opt for a jumpsuit with flared legs to create the illusion of a skirt-like fit.
In contrast, tailoring has continued to have its moment. Ties were a common sighting throughout the collections, but it was the reworking of the suit jacket that really stood out. From grey tweed versions with ties at Prada, Carolina Herrera and Miu Miu to the belted blazers at Balenciaga, Prada and Monse, tailoring is still a key staple for women’s wardrobes.
There’s nothing quite like a cape to add drama to your wardrobe, and designers were keen to showcase this chic accessory. From the short mini-capes that cover shoulders and arms at Givenchy to the longer cape-like backs at Givenchy, this is one outerwear trend that’s here to stay.
A smattering of velvet was also spotted on the runway, from the midi-length shifts at Valentino to the calf grazing dresses at Khaite and Preen. Channel your inner Neo from the Matrix and pair velvet trousers with a boyish blazer or go for a rocker vibe by pairing velvet wide-leg pants with combat boots.
Another way to inject a dose of romance this winter is with a two-tone dress. The style is surprisingly simple – simply look for a dress that’s half one color, and then the other – and it will instantly add interest to your outfit.
